Unfortunately, this software system became unstable in early 2006.
“The vendor we purchased it from no longer gave us the support necessary to maintain the system,” said SPE Libraries Manager Rebekah Priebe. “By early this summer the system was on life support. It took between 30 seconds to one minute to load a Web page, and the e-mail part would stop sending digests every few days. As a result, there was really no going back to the old system.”
Knowing that SPE needed to replace the TIG software as soon as possible, they began searching for a
replacement and settled on Microsoft SharePoint 2007 for several key reasons.
“Microsoft is a brand that any people know and because of indows are familiar with using,” Sid Priebe. “Second, we know that Microsoft will support this product, and there will be a number of enhancements over the next several years, both by Microsoft and independent developers.”
SPE received numerous responses to the new TIG software, many of them not complimentary. Some wanted to have the full text of the posting sent to them, rather than just the headline or topic. Others did not want to have to login and provide a password to read the postings.
“Unfortunately, no online community software today does an incredible job of moderated discussions,” Priebe explained. “The standard format in online community software is for digests to e-mail the title only, which links to the full posting online.”
She said that SPE is working on modifying the system to be able to include the body of the text in the digests, or alerts, but that this may take a month to implement. Until then, if members want to get the full text of the posting by e-mail, they must choose the option to have each posting sent individually, rather than grouped into daily, weekly or monthly installments. “
I know that many TIG members consider the TIGs to be an e-mail discussion only, but they are capable of much more than that,” Priebe said. “This software makes it easy for TIGs to branch out beyond just a discussion. TIG members now have the opportunity to upload files, post calendar events and include attachments to their postings. TIG Chairs can easily post announcements, links and other files if they desire.”
Upstream Magazine - Jeanne M.
WINDOWS COMPUTE CLUSTER SERVER 2003 (CCS 2003)

Supercomputing power of high-performance computing (HPC) is now available on a Windows Platform. Microsoft® Windows® Compute Cluster Server 2003 (CCS) provides an integrated application platform for developing, deploying, running, and managing high performance computing applications. Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003 brings together the power of commodity x64 (64-bit x86) computers, the ease of use and security of Active Directory directory service, and the Windows operating system to provide a security-enhanced and affordable high-performance computing (HPC) solution.

Today it is possible to achieve HPC at the desktop level by using clusters of commodity x64-based computers. WCCS is a cost effective HPC platform that is simple to deploy using wizard-based setup procedures, and easy to manage using familiar tools in the Windows Server® 2003 operating system.

Windows Compute Cluster Server will change the game in High Performance Computing. For example, Reservoir simulations, dynamic models of oil and gas fields, are compute-intensive and demand heavyweight computing power. Until recently, this compute power was generally provided by Linux clusters. While effective, these clusters require Linux expertise and a Linux infrastructure. This has tended to restrict their deployment within major oil and gas companies. Moreover, lack of strong management capabilities prevents high computing systems to be part of IT environment and IT management strategy.

For customers solving complex computational problems, Windows Compute Cluster Server (WCCS) 2003 accelerates time-to-insight by providing an HPC platform that is cost-effective, easy to deploy and administer, and can integrate seamlessly with existing infrastructure and tools. Now, engineers and scientists can spend more time on analysis and less time on IT administration.

If we look at a case in Oil&Gas, we can easily see the benefits of Windows Compute Cluster Server. Microsoft Partner Schlumberger is the world's leading supplier of integrated technology, project management, and information solutions to the oil and gas industry. Trusted for over 80 years to deliver superior results and improved E&P performance, Schlumberger is the maker of ECLIPSE* reservoir simulation software. ECLIPSE enables reservoir engineers to simulate fluid flow of oil and gas in underground reservoirs.

Drilling for oil or gas is an expensive and risky business. It is not unusual for oil and gas companies to invest millions of dollars in infrastructure in the field even before the drilling begins. To eliminate some of the uncertainty in drilling and production scenarios, geologists and engineers create 3D models representing the fluid and rock properties of the subsurface. Performing simulated analysis on large reservoir models requires high computer processing power. In the past, a cost-effective supercomputing solution was not widely available. The setup of a Linux® operating system was often considered too complex, requiring the need for a specialist to administer and maintain the system. Microsoft® Windows® Compute Cluster Server (CCS) 2003 is a high-performance computing (HPC) platform from Microsoft. It runs on industry-standard x.64 computers, which means that you can have the processing speed of a supercomputer at a fraction of the cost. CCS is easy to set up and use, with wizard-based setup procedures and a familiar Windows user interface. Engineers using ECLIPSE can now focus their time on the detail and accuracy of their models, and not on IT administration.
