Ford moving to get in Sync

Over the past 18 months, Microsoft and Ford teams have united to deliver the Ford SYNC program. Ford SYNC, powered by Microsoft, is a fully integrated, voice-activated in-car communications and entertainment system for mobile phones and media players. Last week, Ford launched a media blitz that will include digital, print and TV advertisements. This is the first time Ford has launched a technology feature with the same muscle behind it as a vehicle launch.

The Ford-exclusive technology, called Sync, provides consumers the convenience and flexibility to bring
into their vehicle nearly any mobile phone or media player and operate it using voice commands or
the vehicle’s steering wheel or radio controls. Ford owners will not need to worry about whether their
car or truck is compatible with the latest phone or media player that hits the market. Sync seamlessly
integrates the vehicle with the popular portable electronic devices of today and is upgradeable to
support the devices and services of tomorrow.
• Ford Sync™, powered by Microsoft, is a fully integrated, voice-activated in-car communications and
entertainment system for mobile phones and media players.
• Sync will be available in 12 Ford, Lincoln and Mercury products beginning this calendar year, and
nearly all Ford, Lincoln and Mercury products within two years.
• The system will be standard on Lincoln vehicles and widely available on Ford and Mercury vehicles.
The first vehicles to receive Sync will be the 2008 Ford Focus, Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX.
• With Sync, users can access their mobile phone or media player – including genre, album, artist and
song title – via voice commands.
• Using Bluetooth technology, names and numbers stored in a user’s mobile phone address book are
automatically accessed by the vehicle.
• Sync can host nearly any media player, including the Zune, Apple iPod® and all MP3 players with “Plays for Sure” technology and most USB storage drives.

Sunday, January 7^th, in Detroit, MI, at the North American International Auto Show, Ford and Microsoft announced Ford Sync, an integrated media system for Ford’s entire North American product line. A vehicle equipped with Sync will automatically recognize and support virtually any mobile phone and media player using voice commands and/or buttons on the steering wheel. Bill Gates joined Ford’s press conference via satellite, and discussed Sync with Mark Fields, executive vice president at Ford, during his CES keynote.

Sync is the newest technology to emerge from the Ford-Microsoft relationship.
Users can access their mobile phone or digital music player – including genre, album, artist and song title – via voice commands.
Names and numbers in a mobile phone’s address book are wirelessly and automatically transferred to the vehicle.

AUGUST PRICING ANNOUNCEMENT

The Detroit News’ Bryce Hoffman wrote an article highlighting the affordable price and the sales expectations by Ford. Hoffman said, “Ford Motor Co. is betting on affordable pricing for its new Sync system to help boost sales of Ford, Mercury and Lincoln models.”

Ford hopes low Sync price will boost sales, Computer connectivity system will be a $395 option on 2008 models.

Product Life-Cycle Management (PLM)

The goal of Product Lifecycle Management(PLM) is to capture ideas, manage them to the point that the right product is identified, get the product designed the right way, and ensure that the product is delivered to market at the right time. Essentially, PLM is all about managing innovation.

Starting with the harvesting of idea, PLM manages the process of idea creation and selection and progress through a series of stages including creation, testing, and refining of product design; transition to production; tracking of actual performance; and increasingly, managing end-of-life disposal or recycling.

PLM technology integrates people, process, and systems, enabling contributions to flow through and extended, virtual enterprise without getting bottlenecked inside organization or technology stovepipes. Originating as a solution for mamaging design, over the years PLM has broadened its focus. Today, PLM also covers the software, firmware and electronic components that are representing a growing proportion of the goods.

PLM is taking on a broadened process and communcations focus concerns such as prospecting intellectual property(IP) while collaborating with partners; the innovation processes themselves; related product processes such as end-of-life disposal; and synchronizing communications between virtual design teams scattered across all parts of the globe.

Microsoft's role is to provide a rich infrastructure for collaboration and communication, application development, security, and IP protection. Working with partners and customers to optimize use of PLM infrastructure. Microsoft has a strong PLM partner ecosystem. With each of these partners using Microsoft's application and business infrastructure for thier industry-specific apllications, they are giving companies the benefit of using a single workstation to run high-end graphics and intensive desgin applications side-by-side with everyday productivity tasks, such as creating documentsi spreadsheets and presentations.
